SCHOOL TRAFFIC SAFETY COMMITTEE
Traffic safety near school areas is a highly sensitive subject, which has long been an area of intense concern on the part of public officials, school personnel, parents, and other interested groups and citizens. The Traffic Division is responsible for conducting studies to determine the needs for traffic control measures at school crossings. The West Des Moines City Council formed the West Des Moines School Traffic Safety Committee for the purpose of reviewing the studies made by the Traffic Division and submitting recommendations to the City Council as a result of their reviews.
Procedures for Requesting School Crossing Controls
All written requests for consideration of school crossing controls should be initially submitted to the City of West Des Moines School Traffic Safety Committee, City Traffic Engineer, 560 South 16th Street, West Des Moines, Iowa 50265. The requesting form can be obtained form the link at the bottom of the page. The committee will then transmit the request to the City Traffic Engineer for review and study. The Traffic Engineer will conduct a detailed engineering study and/or and analysis of the requested location and make recommendations to the committee. The committee will review the results and recommendations from the Traffic Engineer and will present their recommendation to the City Council for action. The individual who made the request or a representative of the requesting party will be sent a copy of the committee’s recommendation. The committee holds meetings before the school year and on an as-needed basis.
