Emergency Financial Assistance provides partial payments towards monthly rent payments, gas/electric and water utility bills, or fuel along with assistance in working with related organizations/agencies. Budgeting assistance is also available to qualifying service area households. Program Outreach hours are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8 am to 3 pm, and Wednesday from 8 am to noon. Walk-ins welcome. Call 222-3660 for more information, or to make an appointment. 

HOMELESS PREVENTION AND ASSISTANCE:

WDM Human Services offers several financial assistance programs to help qualifying West Des Moines households prevent homelessness.

  • Rent/Evictions & Mortgage/Foreclosures:
    • Financial assistance for a one-time partial payment of monthly rent/mortgage
    • Assistance in working with landlords
    • Referrals to outside agencies for additional funding if needed        
  • Gas/Electric Utility (Pending) Disconnections:
    • Financial assistance for a  partial payment of a MidAmerican Energy bill to avoid disconnection or for reconnection of service 
    • Assistance in working with MidAmerican Energy to set up a payment arrangement
    • Referrals to outside agencies for additional funding
  • Water (Pending) Disconnections:
    • Financial assistance for a partial payment of a WDM Water Works bill to avoid disconnection or for reconnection of service 
    • Assistance in working with WDM Water Works Customer Service
    • Referrals to outside agencies for additional funding if needed        
  • Gasoline Vouchers:
    • Emergency voucher for fuel
    • For necessary transportation to a job or childcare
    • Must present a valid, current driver's license 
  • Housing:
    • Assistance in working with temporary housing organizations to locate available housing (i.e., shelters)
    • Referrals to outside agencies for financial assistance if needed
    • Assistance in completing income/expense budget worksheet available
    • Note, we do not fund temporary housing
