West Des Moines EMS formed an Honor Guard in April of 2013. The Honor Guard consists of PS Davis, PS Jones, Lt. Harms, PS Mortenson, PS Drake, and PS Cortner (not pictured).
Cortner, Charnetski, and Mortenson attended the National Honor Guard Academy in Connecticut in summer 2013. The academy was run in a pseudo-boot camp type format. They attended the academy for 12 hours a day, learning drill, dress, ceremony, and policy formation in both didactic and hands-on formats. After the academy, the three of them put the rest of the honor guard members through their own academy back home. They train on a regular basis to keep their skills up to date.
With the development of the Honor Guard, WDM EMS also put a line-of-duty death (LODD) policy into place.
Since its formation, the WDM EMS Honor Guard has made an annual appearance at the Memorial Service at PSF 19 for the beginning of EMS Week.
In this Memorial Ceremony, we honor the men and women of local EMS services who lost their lives in the previous year. Their names are carved into the statue that sits in front of PSF 19.
Most recently, our Honor Guard presented the colors at Sec Taylor Field at Principal Park for the EMS Day at the ICubs!
