The rapidly growing community of West Des Moines recognizes the importance of quality of life which includes improvements in human development, education, health, environmental sustainability, as well as recreational amenities and social infrastructure. The Department of Community and Economic Development’s primary purpose is to stimulate the economy, expand employment opportunities, and encourage the establishment and growth of commerce and industry in the City of West Des Moines. The City offers a wide variety of employment opportunities from retail to office to industrial. Housing options range from apartments to upscale townhomes and historic areas to new developments featuring every amenity. West Des Moines is an attractive place to live for all types of people from young adults to empty nesters!
So many choices for working, dining, shopping, and living is certainly part of the appeal of West Des Moines. As part of the City's economic development efforts, the Community and Economic Development staff has and continues to be instrumental in attracting new businesses and housing into the City by working closely with the development community to find suitable sites compatible with zoning requirements and the Comprehensive Plan. Even though there is plenty of new construction occurring, the City also continues to invest in existing and infill housing through housing rehabilitation and economic development grants, which are administered by the Community and Economic Development staff. Retention and growth of business and industry within West Des Moines is a high priority for the City. The City of West Des Moines conducts “Executive Calls” to establish a communication link with the business community, retain business and industry through problem-solving assistance, encourage expansion and growth, and identify means to enhance these opportunities while gaining insight in the business trends of the community.
