Q: Can I receive help with lawn mowing/snow removal?
A:

To qualify for our Handyman services, which include lawn mowing and snow removal, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be either a senior citizen or disabled
  • Be a resident of West Des Moines
  • Complete a Handyman Program application and a consent form

Lower income households receive priority.

 

 

Q: How can our youth group assist with a project to help senior citizens?
A:

WDM Human Services keeps a list of senior citizens who call in with special needs such as raking leaves, painting, planting flowers, etc.

Q: How can I volunteer my time helping low-income families?
A:

WDM Human Services offers many opportunities to those who have a heart for helping the needy. 

  • Volunteers assist on a regularly scheduled basis in our food pantry, clothing closet, and office. 
  • For those who prefer to help with either seasonal or annual events, volunteer openings exist helping with the Iowa Senior Olympics, Toyland during the holidays, etc.

You can choose to donate:

In the Valley Junction area of West Des Moines.

Q: How do I qualify for Transportation?
A:

To receive Transportation services from WDM Human Servies you must be:

  • Over 60 years of age, or medically disabled
  • A resident of West Des Moines

No income guidelines apply.

Q: Who is eligible for services?
A:

There are different eligibility requirements for each of our services.

Low-Income Household Services:

  • Income guidelines are applicable for most services
  • Some services have WDM resident requirement

Elderly/Disabled Services:

  • Senior citizens (60+ years), or disabled
  • Most services have WDM Resident requirement

Children's Services:

  • Income guidelines are applicable for most services
  • Some services have WDM Resident requirement
Q: Can you help pay for my child's music lessons or sports fees?
A:

Scholarships are available to assista qualifying low-income service area households pay for extra-curricular activities such as:

  • Music and dance lessons
  • Sports fees

provided other scholarships are not available.

An application process is necessary.

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday:     9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

                                              1:30 p.m. -   3:00 p.m.

Wednesday, Friday:                  9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

A:

Our Clothing Closet is open:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday:    9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

                                              1:30 p.m. -  3:00 p.m.

Wednesday, Friday:                 Closed

 

Q: When can I see a Worker for help with my rent, utilities, etc.?
A:

Program Outreach Workers are available to interview and assist you:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday:      8:00 a.m. -   3:00 p.m.

Wednesday:                              8:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon

Special arrangements may be made for individuals who work 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
