
The West Des Moines Fire Department is staffed with career firefighters assigned to three stations 24 hours a day 7 days a week, 45 fighters (15 per shift). In addition, 40 volunteer firefighters are notified by pagers to respond to alarms 24 hours a day. The administrative staff includes a full-time chief, fire marshal, two fire inspectors, training officer and administrative assistant. The department is dedicated to saving lives and property and takes pride in the service it provides to 54,000 citizens of our city. Firefighters perform duties that involve fire suppression, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), HAZMAT first response, extrications, water rescue/recovery, ladder operations, search and rescue, fire inspections, and fire prevention activities for school children and various adult groups.
