Job Summary & Requirements

We are seeking community– and service–oriented applicants to perform diverse tasks focused on working with the community to solve problems; to protect life and property by patrolling assigned areas; to enforce laws and regulations; to investigate complaints; to prepare detailed reports; and to perform other law enforcement related activities.

 

Requires a high school diploma or GED AND at least an Associate’s Degree or two (2) years of college (60 credits) in any academic major. Education substitutes are three (3) years of active military duty or three (3) years as a sworn officer. Must be twenty-one (21) years of age on or before date of written entrance examination and a citizen of the United States at the time of application. Uncorrected vision of not less than 20/100 in both eyes, corrected to 20/20, a valid (Iowa) driver’s license and good driving record are required. Must live within one (1) hour normal drive time of the WDM Law Enforcement Center.   

 

Successful candidates will have critical thinking and problem-solving abilities as well as strong writing and speaking skills. See online job description for complete details.            

Civil Service Exam

An examination consisting of several steps will be administered for this position. For applicants submitting all required materials and meeting the minimum requirements, the steps are as follows: Personal Questionnaire Evaluation, initial background investigation, a written (POST) examination*, physical agility test (PAT), and oral board exams. The tentative schedule of exams is as follows:

 

Saturday, April 7, 2018 (morning)

Physical Agility Test (PAT) – ALL Applicants

Saturday, April 7, 2018 (afternoon)

Police Officer Standard Test (POST) – ALL Applicants EXCEPT those who have passed a POST Exam since August 1, 2017, OR who are certified officers in the State of Iowa will waive the POST Exam

Week of April 23, 2018

Oral Board Interviews

Week of June 25, 2018 (tentative)

To be considered for placement on the certified list, applicants must successfully complete each step of the examination process. (*For additional details on the written POST EXAM please contact Lieutenant Brent Kock at 515-222-3357).

Physical/Drug Test  Pre-offer polygraph and post-offer, pre-employment physical, drug test and psychological evaluation are required.

1. Profile: You MUST complete an online profile. This includes ALL sections under the “My Profile” section. (Link to online application system provided below)

 

2. Attachments: You MUST attach the following documents to your profile under the "My Attachments" section:    

 

a) Police Officer Application Packet (a link is provided below)
b) If applicable, a copy of your College Transcripts/Diploma and/or military form DD214
c) Authorization for Background Check release form (a link is provided below)
d) Current/Former Police Officer Packet (To be completed by Current/Former Police Officers ONLY – a link provided below)

3. Certifications: List current certifications in the “My Qualifications” section.

4. Applying for Position: Once you have completed your profile and attached all required documents, you MUST apply for the specific position of Police Officer. (The link to Apply is located on the right side of the main menu. An email will be sent confirming you have applied. It will also be displayed in the “My Application History” section).

5. Assessment: After you apply, click on the link on the right side of the page that says: “Click Here to View All My Assessments.” Click on the required assessment, and then click “Take Assessment.” You must disable your popup blocker before taking the assessment. Assessments will open in a new internet window.
